AI in Healthcare: Understanding Large Language Models Like ChatGPT

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a bigger part of healthcare, and it's important for healthcare leaders to know and understand the basics of how AI works. The technology behind AI chatbots and other communication tools are becoming more common, but what exactly are language models, and how do they work?

What Are Large Language Models (LLMs)?

Think of an LLM as a program that has very thoroughly read through millions of books, websites, and newspapers. When you ask them a question, they base their answer on the patterns they’ve learned, and write the next word, sentence, or paragraph; like the way your phone will try to guess the next word when you’re texting a friend – but a lot more accurately.

How Language Models Learn

LLMs are “trained” by processing huge amounts of text and letting them study connections between the text they are presented. For example, they might analyze a question like, "What are the symptoms of the common cold?" followed by a detailed answer about symptoms. By reviewing numerous such pairs, they identify language patterns, enabling them to accurately answer similar questions later. Unlike the autocomplete feature on your phone, which might predict "blue" after "The sky is", an LLM understands concepts and their associations. They don't just memorize sequences of words; they grasp the idea of "blue" and "sky" and how these concepts are related.

The Tech Behind Language Models

The magic behind language models like ChatGPT lies in its “neural network”, which is inspired by the human brain. Just as various areas of our brain specialize in processing visual information, language, emotions, and logic, each "neuron" in the language model is specialized to handle specific aspects of language understanding. When the LLM processes your question, it's like different brain regions working together: some neurons focus on understanding context, others on constructing the reply.

Looking to the Future

For healthcare leaders, keeping an eye on AI developments is essential. As things shift, knowing how to use language models can make a big difference. They're not just about cutting down on paperwork or speeding up admin tasks; it's about staying sharp in a digital healthcare world. This means better care for patients and a smoother operation for your team. By getting ahead with AI, you’re making sure your organization is ready for whatever comes next, ensuring you're not just keeping up but being a leader in the industry.
